The Hawaii County League of Women Voters will register voters Sept. 26 at three Big Island locations.

The Hawaii County League of Women Voters will register voters Sept. 26 at three Big Island locations.

Forms and information will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Palani KTA in Kona, Foodland in Waimea and Puainako Street KTA in Hilo.

National Voter Registration Day takes place on the fourth Tuesday of September by resolution of the National Association of Secretaries of State. Along with hundreds of organizations across the country, the LWVs nationwide are hitting the ground to provide help with registering and information about voting.

“In every election, people find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration or are not sure how to register,” said Rosemarie Muller, Hawaii County LWV president.

“The most misunderstood part of the voter registration process is that you need to keep your registration up to date,” said Matt Singer, the founder of National Voter Registration Day. “It’s like keeping your driver’s license up to date. If you haven’t voted in a few years, have moved or changed your name — you have to update your voter registration.”

While residents can always walk into one of the two county election offices, it might be easier to take a few minutes and visit the LWV tables for help, Muller said. Residents also can register or update information online.

The next election in Hawaii is not until Aug. 11, 2018, but people can make certain they are ready to vote by registering or updating now.
